for the first solo ep on horror boogie, fedka the irritant steps up, after his outstanding track on horror boogie 01. fedka the irritant is probably best known as the trombonist in the excellent band pest (ninja tune), alongside ben pest (panic bridge, victim, bonus round). he is also a seriously original and versatile producer in his own right. he has released on panic bridge, alongside the other pest members and his trombone techno live sets are something to behold. here, he drops four varied tracks, starting with the behemoth >words for friends<. a heavy slice of wonky techno, with a big kick and rasping synth. next up is one uncertain eyebrow. a building, funky, fuzzy acid-laced track that drops harder and harder as it goes on. on side b, calypso-flavoured, jazzed up >stick it< progresses on to a become a warbling bass effort with a smooth hip-hop vocal. last but not least, is >you only die once<, another funk-laden monster, with a killer slap bass line.

something of a departure into uncharted territory for ostgut ton on the fiftieth single release of the label. following berghains hugely sucessful art exhibition alle which showcased the many visual artists among the members of staff at berghain/panorama bar, ostgut ton shows they cannot be pinned down easily to one genre by offering their anniversary release to two artists of the extended ostgut family who normally wouldnt be associated with what you might have come to expect from the label. shambhu the undisputed queen of the berghain bar ladies (she regulary holds court every saturday upstairs at her very own gitter bar) and rummelsnuff the germanic hulk of the berghain/laboratory bouncers come up with enchanting and surprising results. the release comes pressed as a 7 inch (a first for the label and limited to 500 hand-numered copies) and each side is given to one of the two artists.

the black dog are a legendary live act whose ability to destroy venues and wreck soundsystems is undeniable. they blur the boundaries between djing and performance while possessing an excellent sense of where to take the crowd. live, they represent purist techno, which is also utterly crowd pleasing. on record, tbd are famous for delivering subtlety, emotion, and intellectual richness, as well as great tunes, but never in their career have they managed to convey the sheer visceral impact of their performances as on liber dogma. this album contrasts with last years extremely well-received ambient outings on music for real airports and the dadavistic orkestra collaboration with members of the psychick warriors of gaia. while none of the bands artistry and care has been lost, there is now a greater focus on a pure, and utterly exhilarating, vision of how techno can transform the dancefloor into a realm of complete pleasure.

this obscure lost soundtrack for an even more obscure (and also lost and never finished) italia violenta cop movie was recently discovered when i bought the dusty reel tapes from a restaurant owner in fiumicino, a seaside town near rome. panter 777 aka il labirinto di roma violenta aka the maze of violence, he told me, was directed by gervasio giardano in 1981 and was considered too (politically) explicit by the movie production company who dropped the project after the first screening. the soundtrack, an explosion of wahwah funk riffs and juicy analog synthesizers, was composed by an obscure band called nacho patrol. the restaurant owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was one of the band members and composed most of the tracks. what may be the last vinyl volume of this series breaking out to the world the sound pioneered by music box dj ron hardy in the 80s. the only member paired the cool euro/italo sound with more hot american 80s disco grooves.

songs from the source is a lost and found 1973 recording of the source family. these twelve songs were recorded live in the hollywood hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that spirit of 76 - aka yahowah 13, the savage sons of yahowa, yodship, and firewaterair, now known as children of the sixth root race - had at the whisky. a 1/4 tape copy of the recording was found in chicago in 2006, though no one is really sure how it got there. djin aquarian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for spirit of 76, recalls being sent on a mission to chicago later in 1973, where he believes he left the tape with an old friend. djin wrote most of the songs in the year before he joined with the source, as part of his solo mystical quest to help enlighten the world before it might annihilate itself, adding, im glad both the album and the world are still here.though this rehearsal wasnt meant to be released at the time, there are probably no other recordings as complete of the band doing these songs. the spirit of 76 had a different sound than the one yahowah 13 made with yahowa. songs from the source has more r n b grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms backing the uniquely yahowan lyrical populism of songs like godmen and lost dead but hoping. songs from the source is a miraculous missing piece of the sources positive musical movement. the members of yahowah 13 (djin, sunflower on bass, octavius on drums) were joined by family members ahom, aquariana, cinderella, rhythm, vibration, and zoroaster on lead guitar, to create the ecstatic sound of spirit of 76.

imagine what would happen if the members of !!!, royksopp, the knife and justice had a shy lovechild and you re a little closer to fm belfasts core sound.
